Change is Opportunity in the 21st Century: The Wisdom of Wolves and The Power of Eagles

Dr. Towery’s signature keynote presentation. The first four segments have to do with change and our response to it, with a lot of laughs along the way. These include:

  • Breakthroughs and challenges achieved by the organization being addressed.
  • Cycles through which all organizations and industries tend to evolve.
  • A fun trip through some of the social changes we have all witnessed and the values we long for in our personal and work lives.
  • Elizabeth Kubler Ross’ steps of death and dying and how these stages are experienced during times of change.

The last section is based on Twyman’s books The Wisdom of Wolves, Natures Way to Organizational Success and The Power of Eagles, Natures Way to Individual Accomplishments. This climax to the presentation serves as a metaphor for all human organizations. The visual images used throughout are memorable to all audiences and allow the presentation to close on a high note, which positively influences the entire meaning.

Group Facilitation

Many groups have specific goals they would like to achieve and Twyman is skilled at helping them reach them. It could be arriving at a strategic plan for the upcoming year, devising a workable TQM program for the organization, coping with organizational downsizing, improving teamwork, understanding each other better, communicating effectively and a host of other possibilities. Often, Dr. Towery gives his presentation Change is Opportunity at the beginning of the session and then follows-up with a facilitation session on topics deemed most important by the organization. This is an area where his years of corporate management and leadership experience make the crucial difference.

Mismanaged Agreement

In this session, the video The Abilene Paradox is used to illustrate how organizations get into serious trouble when group members fail to voice their true beliefs, thereby giving the impression that they agree with a decision, when, in actuality, they don’t. This very common phenomenon causes organizations, either work or family, to take courses of action that the individual members do not truly support. The video is humorous and gives personal, family and work examples to which we can relate. Subsequently, after the video, Twyman helps the group identify the keys to the process, and the discussion is individualized for the particular organization. This is a program and a concept that remains with the participants for years to come. They will vow not to "go down the road to Abilene" again.

Conflict Resolution and Problem Solving

There is an art to resolving conflict and solving problems within groups, and it is generally learned rather than ordained. People have different styles of working with conflict, as do organizations, and it is important to understand which styles are more effective in particular situations. In this seminar, participants learn to recognize these different styles, to move effectively from simply resolving conflict to actually arriving at long-term solutions, and to move on to the next organizational challenge.

Myers Briggs Personality Indicator

As a certified administrator of the Myers Briggs Personality Profile for many years, Dr. Towery has found it to be the single best tool to help members of an organization understand how they, as well as the people they work with, prefer to deal with life, both personally and professionally. This instrument not only reveals individual personality tendencies, but organizational traits as well. It allows people to see why they have difficulty working with one person while easily getting along with another. More importantly, they learn what steps to take to improve their effectiveness with everyone with whom they live and work. This session is hugely popular with everyone and is particularly suitable for including spouses.

Groupthink

Group decision-making is a tricky business and extremely vulnerable to failure, for decision-making is ultimately a very human process and therefore subject to human error. This seminar utilizes an outstanding video which features remarkable footage of the NASA Challenger tragedy, the Bay of Pigs fiasco, the Pearl Harbor debacle, and our successful handling of the potentially cataclysmic Cuban missile crisis to highlight how we each can spot defective group decisions. Participants then learn effective strategies to promote positive confrontations so that the group can reason together and make successful decisions on a continuing basis.

Presentation Skills

The time has past when we can count on the CEO or COO of an organization to be the sole person to represent the organization to the public. Today, every member must be ready to stand up before any group and make a favorable impression for the organization, the industry and the person themselves. In this seminar, Dr. Towery uses fun and effective methods to teach the art of giving a powerful, humorous and convincing presentation. A video camera is used, with just the right mixture of factual information and practical application. Studies have shown that speaking in public is an American's greatest fear, outscoring even fear of illness and death. Dr. Towery shows people how to shed this fear and unleash the potential we all possess. Great speakers are not born; they are carefully taught. This seminar will make effective ambassadors of your employees, regardless of position.

“Thank you for the excellent presentation you gave our management team at our recent Hilton Head seminar. It was the most successful, motivational seminar which I have attended, which I believe was due to the straightforward and human way you addressed our staff. I personally found your comments to be extremely practical and refreshingly free of jargon and ‘preaching’.”

Wayne L. Snyder

“Thank you for your keynote speech this past June. As you know shifting gears from presenting to primarily corporate personnel to an audience of college age students is challenging, but you tailored your speech well to our audience.

“I was particularly impressed with the amount of time you spent on the front end researching our business, developing presentation drafts, and getting to know us and what we do. I have seen many keynote speakers simply deliver a prepackaged presentation and it does not always go over well.

Elizabeth M. Yoder, VP/General Manager
Ward Broadcasting Corporation

“You were WONDERFUL! I really enjoy hearing you speak on such ‘ordinary’ subjects that end up so ‘extraordinary’! Your topics always send me away thinking and pondering (for several days) about life in general, but mostly about my own self worth—and I believe that’s where your success as a speaker lies!”
