| In the beginning of this
novel, one of Graham Greene's many brilliant ones, you thought Charlie
Fortnum was just talking about how much alcohol it took him to feel the
"click," as Brick described it to Big Daddy in "Cat on
a Hot Tin Roof." So we tend to write Charlie off as a bumbling boozer,
but as things progress, we see that Charlie is exactly right and indeed,
THE PROPER MEASURE is THE IMPORTANT THING
"Jimmy says he'll never tell
a lie. Well, I lie all the time. I have to - to balance the family ticket.
" We look for balance in our sports teams,
as well as our orchestras, corporate staffs, political tickets, or any
other group we form. However, while we place great value on organizational
balance, we often forget our own powerful need in our personal lives
for "THE PROPER MEASURE." This particular type of balance seems to be lost on many of today's executives and corporate officers. Their seemingly insatiable thirst for riches beyond any possible need, (not to mention far beyond their performance) is responsible for much of the cynicism and disrespect of their employees and the public at large. |

"Something in nature causes us to start slacking
off at our moment of greatest accomplishment. As you become successful
you will need a great deal of self-discipline not to lose your sense
of humility and commitment." This is a natural response. I know. Sadly, I have been guilty of this phenomenon. It is like a ball team that enjoys a comfortable lead and begins playing safe to run out the clock. Before they know it they are overtaken by a more determined and focused opponent and lose the game! "Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your
balance, you must keep moving." "Unfortunately, the balance of nature decrees
that a superabundance of dreams is paid for by a growing potential for
nightmares" Dreaming, at some point, must be replaced by realistic goal setting that incorporates movement TOWARD those goals. Regular, realistic, honest reappraisal is crucial. |

"I make money using my brains and lose money
listening to my heart. But in the long run the books balance pretty
well." "Food is an important part of a balanced diet." Yes, oversized, unrealistic dreams do draw us away from the basics. We need to keep in mind the progression of Maslow's law. "The balance of nature is reached when heating
the house costs as much as going south for the winter." We have all seen businesses continue doing what they have been doing, only because they have been doing it. In reality, it no longer works and is losing them gobs of money. |

| Whether you need a speaker,
mediator or consultant - experience matters - and Twyman Towery has it
(while others often just talk about it). Twyman's books are a great read that beautifully decorate the coffee table, but they also send the type of message that you want others to hear from you. |

|
"When things reach their limit, they are forced
to bounce back." But our job as stewards of ourselves and the organizations we work with is not to allow things to "hit bottom" before we "re-balance." "I have the feeling that in a balanced life
one should die penniless. The trick is dismantling." AND SO IT IS. REMEMBER "Life is a balance of holding on and letting
go." |
