The above idea erupted in me when I was about twelve, sitting on top of my Mamma's (my word for grandmother's) smoke house, batting rocks with an old broom handle into a cotton field, highway, apple orchard or garden. Unfortunately, sometimes the rock also plunked the unique farm house where Mamma was invariably cooking on her four burner wood stove. It would be a poor, lonesome scene for many, but for me it was the perfect way to enter a big, limitless world.

"THE INVARIABLE MARK OF WISDOM IS TO SEE THE MIRACULOUS IN THE COMMON."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

And that's the way it was for me. I wasn't doing anything special - but things felt truly miraculous! I don't mean I possessed wisdom then (or that I do now) - of course I didn't and probably don't. But these landmarks I was hitting rocks at were not, to me, what they appeared to be to others. To me they were different countries, goals, possibilities, people, challenges, failures, triumphs and accomplishments that I couldn't fully yet imagine.

"I dream a lot. I do more painting when I'm not painting. It's in the subconscious."
-Andrew Wyeth

Plan your Spring or Summer executive or organizational retreat now. Give me a call at 615 370-3587 to discuss what you want your organization to accomplish. Together you can plan a retreat/seminar that will combine work and enjoyment to bring about real organizational change.

So where to go with your dream to make it reality? How do you become unique? Of course you already are, but how do you develop it, illustrate it to others? For starters:

"FOLLOW THE GRAIN IN YOUR OWN WOOD."
-Howard Thurman

This may consist more of letting go than forging ahead. You have known people who lived lives of misery because they tried to follow the path others marked for them. In the business world, as well as the personal one, the veneer only lasts so long. Solid cherry remains solid cherry through scratches and dents, while veneer turns to particle board and screams "imitation" to all who see it. After all:

SIMPLICITY IS THE FATHER OF WISDOM.
-T.L.T

But simplicity does not equate to easy. It is often harder to establish and maintain than complexity and fancy bells and whistles. Simplicity of purpose must be worked at continuously. In my own case:

"IT'S TAKING A LONG TIME TO BECOME THE PERSON I WANTED TO BE."
-T.L.T

Like all kids (and grown-ups for that matter), I dreamed of being a hero. But it looked so hard and extraordinary that I figured it was out of my reach, not realizing that it is basically simple and clear cut. The term hero is used so liberally today that it has almost ceased to have meaning, but I'll give it mine:

"HEROES ARE THE PEOPLE WHO DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE WHEN IT NEEDS TO BE DONE, REGARDLESS OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES."

Twyman Towery is a Rule 31 Listed Civil/Family Mediator, a specialist in the mediation of civil conflicts. Mediation is an excellent method to keep conflicts out of court. Lawsuits are expensive, time consuming and often create irreparable damage between the parties.

So, be better, smarter, more informed about something than anyone else. It is a positive that will outweigh many negatives. Most of all, it will give you pride and self confidence that no one can take away. Remember:

"All is perspective. To a worm, digging in the ground is more relaxing than going fishing."
-Clyde Abel
