| This quote by Kenneth Bird,
though silly on the face of it, makes a very important point. If we can
find the humor in not only anything, but everything, we are not only survivors,
but HAPPY survivors.
"We really ought to take
humor more seriously." Humor is serious stuff. Remember: "There's many a true word said
in jest." Laughter has serious, GOOD, consequences. You already know of the studies that show the positive effects humor has on our health ("Jest for the health of it." - Patty Wooten), relationships and overall success in life. But don't forget the benefits in the workplace. |

"If
you can laugh together, you can work together." Hate simply doesn't exist among people who are sincerely laughing together. However, my observation is that humor has almost disappeared from business. Just walk down the halls of almost any hospital, corporate office, or airport terminal and notice the number of people with their heads down, avoiding eye contact, much less friendly banter. ("No sense of humor; jest lag." - Anon). The boss, who sets the organizational tone, is often AS guilty, or MORE guilty, than anyone. "A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership,
of getting along with people, of getting things done." As an Organizational Psychologist, filing a follow-up report to a client that their organization needs to inject more fun and humor into their operation would probably seem like a professional cop out, and I would be lucky to get my fee. But it might be the best, most useful advice I could give. "After God created the world, he made man and
woman. Then to keep the whole world from collapsing, HE invented humor." |

When asked about the lack of "workplace fun" some people (usually men) reply that they can't be funny because of fear of gender, racial, disability, or other type of discrimination. No one would deny that things are a lot more "touchy" in this regard than in the past, and where the "line" is often depends on where each individual thinks the line is. Unfortunately, there are few distinct guidelines to go by, particularly in matters of sexual discrimination. The same is true in matters of humor, for: "What is appealing to one person is appalling
to another." This is not a reason to run, but a reminder
to be more empathic and perceptive to the feelings of others. Why is
this so important? Because: "Humor is the ability to see
three sides of one coin." Being able to see all sides of a question is crucial to solving it and a good laugh at tense moments removes barriers that were standing in the way of agreement. After all: "Humor is really laughing off
a hurt, grinning at misery." When we become intransigent, compromise and agreement are impossible, but: "Humor prevents a "hardening
of the attitudes." Today, more than at any time I can recollect, a flexible mind is a not a choice, but a necessity. Humor helps us be flexible, receptive and self depreciating - which is fun for everybody. "Humor is a reminder that no
matter the throne one sits on, one sits on one's bottom." |

Twyman
is researching the characteristics that distinguish people who are able
to come back from life's setbacks and catastrophes. What characteristics
set them apart from those who are unable to stop their freefall after
being faced with a painful divorce, loss of job, or severe illness.

Everybody has their mental and physical barriers - depression, finances, writers block (often mine), etc. - when creativity and inspiration fail us. Our laughter and the mirth of those around us is often the ticket to new ideas and concepts. Remember:
So, take humor seriously - because it is! This month's Rx for all of us is to inject humor and laughter into every conversation, meeting and interaction. After all: "Laughter is a tranquilizer
with no side effects."
