| We live in a free enterprise;
capitalist society where competition is fierce and WINNING
often becomes the goal in everything we do. The recent Olympics were a
beautiful example of what a difference 100th of a second can make. But,
NO ONE is going to win all of the
time at everything.
"If you make every game a
life and death proposition, you're going to have problems. For one thing,
you'll be dead a lot." Picking our competitive battles selectively and saving the others for fun is a necessity, not a wimpy luxury: "You must not fight too often
with one enemy, or you will teach him all your tricks of war." |

The important thing is to prepare as best we can and
learn from each encounter: Learning should be a life-long endeavor and to consider being second or third a LOSS is to show ignorance of the "life process." "When you want to win a game, you have to teach.
When you lose a game, you have to learn." When we reach a certain level, everyone is smart, competent and good at what they do. When everyone is of fairly equal ability: "The ability to learn faster than your competitors
may be the only sustainable competitive advantage." Even Bobby Knight, the legendary coach known as much for his embarrassing physical outbursts as for his incredible winning ways implores: "Mental toughness is to physical as four is
to one". |

| Twyman's books are fun, readable and informative - but that is not their only purpose. The strategic purpose is to create a climate for change in both people and organizations. Let these economical, but powerful books be your Christmas gift to employees, friends and family. Get that chore taken care of NOW! Read what people have to say about these books. | ||||

We often make the mistake of believing that competition means beating, humiliating, or banishing the "opponent." We forget that: "There is nothing noble in being superior to
some other person. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous
self." After all: It is undeniable that there are many similarities between competition in sports, card and board games and the very serious "competition" in business and the professions: "If you know your strength it
never becomes a weakness. If the market knows your strength then it
becomes a weakness." And one of the greatest weaknesses we can face is the complacency that often accompanies success: "The time your game is most
vulnerable is when you're ahead, never let up." And we should never underestimate the importance of mental confidence (which emanates from preparedness) and toughness: "Competitive golf is played
mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course, the space between your ears." |

But beware of the people who espouse the greatness of competition, free enterprise and entrepreneurship while secretly trying to avoid it by controlling others, both personally and organizationally: "Like many businessmen
of genius he learned that free competition was wasteful, monopoly efficient.
And so he simply set about achieving that efficient monopoly." We should avoid these misguided individuals and the organizations where they reside, so we will not be there when their comeuppance occurs. For: "Every man in the world is better
than someone else and not as good someone else." In conclusion - we are in a competitive world and being competitive when it counts is a must, not an option. Just keep in mind that: "After the game the King and pawn go into the
same box." |
