“YOU KNOW YOU'RE GETTING OLD WHEN ALL OF THE NAMES IN YOUR BLACK BOOK HAVE M.D. AFTER THEM.”
Arnold Palmer
We all share a little dark humor about our aging, but the truth is that all of the rules have changed. What was 60 a few years ago equates to 50 or less today. People may want to get out of the corporate grind, but they want to continue working - just at something they love.
“TO BE NEITHER MODEST NOR DEFERENTIAL WHEN YOUNG, TO HAVE PASSED ON NOTHING WORTHWHILE WHEN GROWN UP, AND TO REFUSE TO DIE WHEN OLD, THAT IS WHAT I CALL BEING A PEST.”
Confucius (551-479 B.C.)
Today, we have the capacity, will, savvy, education and desire to stay active long past the traditional "gold watch" day. We are no longer consumed in our second life with just "getting ahead", but can concentrate on "getting it right."

Until the recent past, it was true that:
“THE AGE OF 65 IS THE TIME THAT MARKS THE FIRST DAY OF YOUR LIFE SAVINGS.”

It was a given. Understood. Accepted.

Today we can look ahead to many more years of creative productivity. A new career of the heart. More time with the important people in our life, whether friends, family, or professional colleagues. Our work hours can now REALLY mean something to the world as well as ourselves.
“WORRIED ABOUT WHAT TO GET HIS GIRLFRIEND FOR A BIRTHDAY PRESENT, THE TEENAGER ASKED, "MOM, IF YOU WERE GOING TO BE 16 TOMORROW, WHAT WOULD YOU WANT?" HIS MOTHER REPLIED, "NOT ANOTHER THING, SON, NOT ANOTHER THING.”
Anonymous
We know we won't be 16 again and in fact are very different people now than we were at that age. In fact, at my seminars, people are amazed at how hard it is for them to reconnect with the person they were in that earlier segment of their lives. Today, people are leaving the traditional workplace to shape a new life. They may have enjoyed the challenges of the old one, but they LOVE the satisfaction of the new one.
“IT'S JUST AS WELL I WON BECAUSE IF JENNIFER CAPRIATI WON, SHE COULDN’T DRIVE IT ANYWAY.”
Martina Navratilova, after beating 14 year old Capriati in a tournament and winning a car.
But we KNOW we can drive the car.

“CHILDREN ARE A GREAT HELP. THEY ARE A COMFORT IN YOUR OLD AGE. AND THEY HELP YOU REACH IT FASTER TOO.”
Anonymous
But many of our children have flown the nest, so we can't use them as an excuse for not following our dreams.
“WHEN I MADE MY DEBUT AS A 12-YEAR-OLD IN BERLIN, PEOPLE USED TO SAY, "ISN'T HE WONDERFUL FOR HIS AGE?" NOW THEY'RE BEGINNING TO SAY THE SAME THING AGAIN.”
Mischa Elman (1891-1967) American Violinist born in Russia, on his 70th birthday.

What they say about Twyman: "Your keynote address literally reverberated throughout the rest of our convention. At dinner people were talking about the concepts you introduced to help the appreciate and understand others. Please feel free to use my name as a reference at any time."
Craig Burridge, Executive Director, New York Pharmacy Society

“The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that' you've got it made.”
Groucho Marx
In the second career period of your life, you don't have to fake it anymore. You can be as honest and fair dealing as you want to be.
Twyman's October Speaker's Tip: Unless you are giving an extremely technical speech, talk, or report, try never to use detailed notes. It turns audiences off. Especially never read word for word from notes unless it is for a short quote. Use "prompt" words to remind you of what you want to say and know your material well enough to be able to say it. There are many ways to hide these "prompt" words your speech looks completely "off the cuff." We will discuss these in the next newsletter.
Dream chasers know no age, racial, sexual, socio-economic or intellectual barriers. They have one thing in common...wanting to do that special something in their lives before time does, in fact, run out. If any of you have stories on this subject to share, please send them to me. Until next time:
