| We all understand EXACTLY what Red Adair means, because when an oil wildfire is roaring, there is no margin for error. We know better, but the temptation is always there to go for the low ball price and hope we get the quality. | ||||||
“NOBODY ROOTS FOR
GOLIATH.” Wilt Chamberlain |
||||||
| Wilt ought to know, for he was the big man a lot of people rooted against only because of his bigness. And we all know that when we are on top, everybody will be gunning for us. We immediately understand Wilt's analogy. | ||||||

“MIRACLES ARE GREAT, BUT THEY ARE SO
DAMNED UNPREDICTABLE.” Peter Drucker |
||||||
The usually dry and humorless Peter Drucker broke his mold with this statement, but we all understand that he means we better take care of the problem ourselves and not count on divine intervention saving the day. SO WHEN YOU REALLY WANT TO GET YOUR POINT ACROSS, REMEMBER, METAPHORS WORK PREDICTABLE MIRACLES WHILE PREACHING BRINGS PREDICTABLE YAWNS. For example, which gets your attention more, explaining to your management group the virtues of paying attention, keeping quiet while observing, etc., etc., etc. or, the quote: |
||||||
“YOU CAN OBSSERVE A LOT JUST BY
WATCHING” Yogi Berra |
||||||
Whenever a laugh accompanies a lesson, it is REMEMBERED. I remember once when facilitating a retreat for a group of executives I was trying to make the point (I had learned about this from their employees) that executives need to get out of their offices and out among the employees. YAWN! Then I quoted John LeCarre, the noted British author when he said: |
||||||
“A DESK IS A DANGEROUS PLACE TO
WATCH THE WORLD FROM.” |
||||||
| Everybody got it. For example, most of us claim we welcome helpful or honest criticism. | ||||||

“HONEST CRITICISM IS HARD TO TAKE,
PARTICULARLY WHEN IT COMES FROM A RELATIVE, A FRIEND, AN ACQUAINTANCE, OR A
STRANGER.
” Anonymous |
||||||
| In other words, we flat hate criticism from anybody, anywhere, anytime. Saying the obvious straight out is not nearly as effective as a humorous metaphor. A good example is when one irate subscriber to a publication wrote to the editor: | ||||||
“YOUR JOURNAL WOULD BETTER SERVE ITS
INTENDED AUDIENCE IF PRINTED ON A SOFTER QUALITY OF
PAPER.
” Anonymous |

| Well, I hope you don’t feel that way about this newsletter. Because: | ||||||
“IF THE SMART MAN DOESN'T LEARN
SOMETHING FROM THE IDIOT, IT'S NOT THE IDIOTS FAULT
.” Anonymous |
||||||
| In case you are wondering, I’m the idiot. We will talk about metaphors in future newsletters, but for now, give them a try. And always remember, | ||||||
“FORGIVE YOUR ENEMIES, BUT NEVER FORGET THEIR NAMES.” John F. Kennedy |
||||||
| If you have any favorite metaphors you use to make a point please forward to them so I can share them with our readers. Call or email me anytime – I love hearing from you. | ||||||
