“YOU CAN'T THINK AND HIT AT THE SAME TIME.”
Yogi Berra, "The Yogi Book"
(Yogi said this after his manager told him to stop swinging at balls out of the strike zone. Then he said, "Yogi, next time you're up, think about what you are doing." With that piece of advice in mind, Yogi then struck out in three pitches.)
No, thinking and hitting at the same time is not easy to do, but that is exactly what a real LEADER must do. They must be a working, involved, practical executive, with all the duties that entails. But at the same time, they are responsible for devising a strategy that will develop not only their organization, but their subordinates as well. In other words:
“LEADERS PROVIDE THE SKY IN WHICH OTHERS MAY SOAR.”
Brad Baggett, "Taking Charge"
Tom Weiss is the President of the Continental Division of Lifepoint Hospitals. He believes that the primary role of a leader is to set the proper tone for the organization. He explains that this means not only giving members the freedom and encouragement to operate at their maximum potential, but also letting them know that THEY are EXPECTED to lead, that THEY are EXPECTED to find the SOLUTIONS as well as identify the problems faced by the organization.

“THE COACH WHO THINKS HIS COACHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HIS TALENT IS AN IDIOT.”
Joe Capchink
While the leader utilizes every resource available to him to identify people, it is the sole responsibility of the true leader to identify REAL talent:
“FEW GREAT MEN WOULD HAVE GOTTEN PAST PERSONNEL.”
Paul Goodman
Today, the topic I am most often asked to address or write about, whether it is for seminars, retreats or speeches, is LEADERSHIP. With the myriad of technical innovations and internet miracles available to us all, it is still LEADERSHIP for which people are begging. The following is a truism:
“TELL ME AND I WILL FORGET, SHOW ME, AND I MAY REMEMBER, BUT INVOLVE ME, AND I'LL UNDERSTAND.”
From the IdeaBank Web Site

A PERSONAL STORY: My first Leader/Boss and later good friend was Henry Cheairs Hughes, Deputy Superintendent of Tennessee's Department of Mental Health. He was a great leader and the man that taught me more about management/leadership than everyone else put together. Henry had arranged for me to be sent through graduate school and the deal was that I paid that back through several years' service to the state. He was a man who had been kicked out of several colleges, including West Point, and in fact had never graduated. He was known as a pretty hard drinker (Jack Daniels, of course), womanizer, and Southern playboy type. He served as adjutant to General Curtis LeMay during WW11. He lived on an old plantation and abided by the old Southern ways of doing things and was at the office by 6:30 every morning. He would never do my job for me, even when I begged him (like the time, as a 23 year old administrator I had to fire my first person, a Ph.D. psychologist), but he was always there for me. (This incidence required four phone calls to him before I could complete the act), but WE got through it together. I never had to lean on him for that kind of help again. He was a true leader and was determined to make me one through INVOLVEMENT.
It is the leader's job to involve people to the point that THEY are taking the lead, pelting the "boss" with their ideas and alternative solutions for every problem they identify. Remember:
“THE OUTSTANDING ORGANIZATION IS JUDGED BY HOW QUICKLY NEWS TRAVELS UPWARD.”

What they say about Twyman: "Thank you for the wonderful presentation you made to our senior leadership conference. It was successful beyond our expectations and that was due in great part to your inspirational comments. It was a pleasure to have you as part of our team."
Paul W. Essex, Brigadier General, United States Air Force, Fairfield Air Force Base

Leadership is hard to define, but its results are easy to see:
“IT IS BETTER TO HAVE ONE PERSON WORKING WITH YOU THAN HAVING THREE PEOPLE WORKING FOR YOU.”
Dwight D. Eisenhower - Taken from, The Power Of Eagles: Nature's Way To Individual Accomplishment, by Twyman L. Towery, Ph.D.
The true leader wants to see people achieve greatness, for they realize that when you:
“HELP OTHERS GET AHEAD, YOU WILL ALWAYS STAND TALLER ON THEIR SHOULDERS.”
Bob Mowad
Speakers Tip - Whether I am speaking or facilitating an audience of 5,000, 500, or five, there is always one principle that applies - use humor - and lots of it. Humor from your own personal life experience is always the best received, but make it constant and relevant to the subject at hand.
"I think the boy's cheese slid off his platter."
This "saying" was sent to me by my friend, Frank Bradley. Thanks to all of you that have contributed to keeping unique American sayings alive. Please keep them coming!
I am re-starting work on my book, "The Depth Of Dolphins: Nature's Way To Intelligent Communication" and would appreciate any personal "Dolphin Stories" you may have. These are fascinating animals that have created many memorable moments for humans. Have you swam with, touched, seen Dolphins in ways memorable to you? Please email me and tell me about the experience. Thanks.
Call, write or email me with your ideas, suggestions, or to talk things over about an event you have coming up that I can help you with.
