”WE ARE CONFRONTED WITH INSURMONTABLE OPPORTUNITIES”
Pogo
And now is the time to identify those opportunities, devise a strategy, make sure your team is acting like one and get going in this New Year.

“WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET”
Flip Wilson

People will judge your organization by results, not flowery rhetoric. I have been amazed over the years at how people's scores on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) have changed. The percentage of people that score high in thinking has greatly overcome those that are high in feeling. I’m not saying this is good or bad, but it reflects the fact that organizations are requiring logical, bottom line thought and performance.

“SUCCESS IS OFTEN DETERMINED ON THE DRAWING BOARD”
Robert J. McKain

But make sure your strategic plan (business and personal) has been well studied and formulated. Always keeping in mind that

“THE TASK OF THE LEADER IS TO GET HIS PEOPLE FROM WHERE THEY ARE TO WHERE THEY HAVE NOT BEEN.”
Henry Kissenger

After we have received everyone’s input and developed our strategic plan, it is the leader’s role to make sure that execution occurs. And if last year was a good year that causes people to challenge the need for any change, remind them that

“SUCCESS HAS MADE FAILURES OF MANY MEN”
Cindy Adams

With success, many people become complacent and simply start coasting, without passion or purpose.

“GREAT MINDS HAVE PURPOSES, OTHERS HAVE WISHES”
Washington Irving

I, for one, think that many organizations put too much emphasis on financial rewards and not enough on the basic needs that almost all humans yearn for. Remember:

“PEOPLE WANT RICHES; THEY NEED FULFILLMENT”
Bob Conklin

(Of course having both is nice)

NOW is the time to stress the need for hard work and a tough mental attitude, so anybody not ready for “permanent whitewater” can make other plans for their future.

“THE GEM CANNOT BE POLISHED WITHOUT FRICTION, NOR MAN PERFECTEDWITHOUT TRIALS”
Chinese Proverb

And many organizations must make some tough personnel and capital decisions now. These are not easy, at least if they are the right ones, but

“THEY THAT SOW IN TEARS SHALL REAP IN JOY”
Bible, Psalms 126: 5

The best organizations are those that expect every employee to confront problems, solutions and most of all – each other - when confrontation is needed. A lot of management authorities are challenging the viability of the concept of the term empowerment, but do stress the need for each employee to accept responsibility for the success or failure of the organization (and themselves).

“A SLAVE IS SOMEONEWHO WAITS FOR SOMEONE TO COME AND FREE HIM.”
Ezra Pound

In my seminars, at retreats and in speeches I always try to stress the positive aspects of challenging each other on a regular basis, so the personal feelings are removed from the equation.

And as Ann Landers put it:

“OPPORTUNITIES ARE USUALLY DISGUISED AS HARD WORK, SO MOST PEOPLE DON’T RECOGNIZE THEM”

But when executives demand constant confrontation and creativity from their employees, they must confront their own responsibilities. Many employees today see their company’s operating principle to be:

“HIRE’EM, TIRE’EM, THEN FIRE’EM”

Many employees feel they are bombarded by management’s constant urging them on with homilies such as

“TO WIN YOU HAVE TO RISK LOSS”

But often when an employees do take a risk to try to improve the organization and it doesn’t work out heads roll (and not at the top). In fact the top dogs may get more stock options for reducing the work force, while the employees are walking out with their pink slips.

So let’s head into this year with an emphasis on sound strategy, a belief in the necessity of teamwork (no it hasn’t gone out of style), the backbone to take on the tough problems through a constant emphasis on execution and a positive, optimistic attitude based on reality

“AN OPTIMIST IS A PERSON WHO STARTS A CROSSWORD PUZZLE WITH A FOUNTAIN PEN”

It is easy for a consultant/speaker such as me to spout these things at you, because:

“THERE ARE THREE KINDS OF BUSINESS PEOPLE; SUCCESSFUL, UNSUCCESSFUL AND THOSE WHO GIVE SEMINARS TELLING THE SECOND GROUP HOW THE FIRST GROUP DID IT.”

So while I may plead partly guilty to this quote, if we can do this successfully, our seminars and retreats will be well worth their weight in gold.
